Cactus Types

Cactus or Cacti is a special type of plant that belongs to the family of  Cactacea]. They are one of the largest families of plants that grow in the dry regions of the world. There are almost two thousand known species that are native to South, Central and North America. The vast number of cactus types are perfectly modified o the conditions of a desert using their stems for storing water during dry seasons. [ is in fact a flower plant which serves a significant role in its ecosystem by offering shelter and food to several animal, reptile and bird species. For instance, desert tortoises often live on the local cactus fruits and stems.   

However, human attraction towards cactus equals that of wildlife. Cactus growing has become a big business in several parts of America and this trade has expanded over the years. There are several different cactus types that can be found in various parts of the world. There are around thousand to two thousand different kinds of cactus plants. As some are very east to find others are quiet rare. It is in fact not necessary for a person to be a perfect gardener in order to enjoy the unusual beauty of cactus. Easter lily or the sea urchin is one of the cactus type's which forms a part of with peanut cacti.  

The major characteristics of these cactus types are that they vary in sizes and possess a thick coat of thorns. One of the most remarkable aspects about this plant is that it possesses several large flowers despite of the size of the cactus.

The barrel cactus is yet another form of cactus and they are called barrel due to its huge shape like the barrel and large yellow thorns. They are also famously known as compass plants since they grow south to avoid sunburns. The surface of this plant contains small suckers.      

The period of flowering for these plants is late compared to some of the other cactus types. The beaver tail is yet other most famous types of cactus. You need a huge space to grow these plants as they usually grow at a height of 2.5 inches. Brain plant is another type of cactus which has a thin rib. Besides that is one of the most renowned forms of cactus. It takes almost 75 years for this kind of cactus to grow since the growing rate of these plants is very slow.  The flowers of this plant normally blooms at night and are pollinated by several bats.

Some of the other cactus types that can be found in America include the pincushion cactus and the columnar cactus. The major characteristic of columnar cactus is that it comprises of several cylindrical stems and ribs from top to bottom. Species like packycereus, stenocereus, carnegiea and lophocereus are included in the wide variety of cactus. Pincushion cactus generally contains un-branched cylindrical stems without ribs. The size of this type of cactus is below 6 inches. Thorns which are in the center are normally hooked and usually include . Thorny pear cactus generally possesses pad-like compressed stems.
