The scientific name of the San Pedro Cactus is Trichocereus Pachanoi. In comparison to other types of cactus, the San Pedro cactus grows pretty fast and is mostly found the dehydrated areas of Peru that are approximately 2000 to 3000 meters above the sea level. Whereas these plants occur naturally, there are natives in Peru who cultivate the plant in their garden alongside other herbs. At full maturity, the San Pedro can attain a maximum height of 20 meters.
The San Pedro cactus was and is still being used by witch doctors and spiritual leaders for both medicinal purposes and a link to the spiritual realm. It is believed that the San Pedro cactus effects cause the user to connect to the spiritual world and see that which other are unable to see. It is also thought that the users can also see the root causes of various ailments. The San Pedro is regarded by many as the Peruvian torch. Therefore, if you would like to know more about the San Pedro cactus, you will find this article quite an interesting read.
The San Pedro cactus was initially used sacramentally. This was around 3000 BC. Some remains of the San Pedro cactus was discovered by a leading Peruvian archeologist. They were neatly wrapped in manner that resembled modern day cigar. The findings were dated back to 2000 BC. This goes on to show that San Pedro cactus and the Peruvian culture is one and the same thing. In fact, there is a sculptor in an ancient Inca temple that shows a goddess holding a San Pedro cactus.
When European missionaries first came to Peru, they were appalled by the traditions of the people especially the use of San Pedro cactus. It offended them that the natives used a wild plant as a means of speaking to the dead. Coming from a civilized society, the missionaries likened this spiritual plant to prohibited narcotics such as cannabis and salvia. However, there is one missionary from Spain who managed to identify the positive effects of the San Pedro cactus. He noted that the plant can be used to cure a number of common ailments.
The San Pedro cactus is presently lawful in the United States. But, it can only be nurtured so long as it is not meant for human consumption. There are also countries where cultivation of the plant is illegal and any person found going against the law is highly penalized. Countries where cultivation and distribution of the San Pedro cactus has been prohibited are Australia, Sweden and Norway.
